Cupressus cashmeriana or ‘Kashmir Cypress’

A large group of trees that includes includes plants from the genus Cupressus species such as Cupressus macrocarpa or ‘Monterey cypress’, the popular Cupressus sempervirens and Cupressus glabra or ‘Smooth Arizona cypress’.

Cultivars such as Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Leighton Green’ are widely used as hedging plants.

The foliage on Cypress Trees varies from species to species, some have scale like folaige, such as Cupressus Leylandii (which is actually a sterile hybrid), Cupressus sempervirens and others, some have needle like foliage including the Taxodiums including T.disichum or ‘Bald Cypress.

Some have wonderful weeping foliage such as Cupressus cashmeriana or ‘Kashmir Cypress’, pictured.

We also have Chamaecyparis or false cypress which includes both dwarf and larger hedging varieties.

Varieties

The large growing Cypress varieties include both tall trees as well as many suited as hedging plants.

  • Cupressus cashmeriana or ‘Kashmir Cypress’ is a wonderful large weeping tree.
  • Cupressus funebris is the ‘Weeping Chinese Cypress’, an excellent screening or reature tree.
  • Cupressus leylandii varieties are often used as hedging plants.
  • Cupressus sempervirens varieties include a number of excellent upright forms, many called ‘Pencil Pines’.
  • Cupressus macrocarpa

Most are well suited to USDA Zones 4 – 8.

Landscaping Uses

Although they are widely used as hedging and screening trees, some Cypress varieties make excellent specimens for larger gardens.

And of course, Cupressus varieties are widely used in landscaping.
