If you have never tasted a home grown strawberry, you will be in for a delightful experience. Sweet, rich and juicy, that describes them.

You can grow them in the garden, in strawberry pots, in hanging baskets or even in a vertical garden.
Strawberry plants are usually sold Online as bare rooted plants ready for planting.

Varieties include Chandler, Ozark Beauty, Earliglow, Sweet Carlie, Red Guantlet and Tioga. Organically grown strawberry plants and varieties are also available for sale from some growers.

Some varieties of strawberries are regarded as 'early strawberries' they produce fruit earlier than others.

These include varieties such as: Earliglow, Annapolis, Rosa, Elsanta, Chandler, Galletta and AC Wendy.

Cabot is a late variety with very large fruit. Mesabi is another late variety.

Consult with your supplier as to the best early and late varieties for your area before purchasing.

Strawberry Care

Site selection and soil preparation are the key to growing great strawberries in the ground.

Select a position in full sun. Preferably in a sheltered position.
Use certified runners (disease free)
Plant after frosts are over or in a frost free position.
Prepare the soil by removing all weeds, and digging in well rotted compost and manure.
Consider hilling up the soil, and installing drippers.
Consider laying black plastic over the hilled area to control weeds, and keep them strawberries clean and off the ground.
Plant strawberry runners (in slits in the plastic if you are using it), with the crown at soil level.
Water well.
Use hoops and netting to keep the birds away.
Water regularly.
